The Reason Why Women Live Longer Than Men Essay Example for Free

The Reason Why Women Live Longer Than Men Essay Scientists are finally beginning to understand one of life’s enduring mysteries why women live, on average, longer than men. The new research describes how mutations to the DNA of the mitochondria can account for differences in the life expectancy of males and females. Mitochondria, which exist in almost all animal cells, are vital for life because they convert our food into the energy that powers the body. Dr Damian Dowling and PhD student Florencia Camus, from Monash School of Biological Sciences in the U. S., worked with Dr David Clancy from Lancaster University to uncover differences in longevity and biological ageing across male and female fruit flies that carried mitochondria of different origins. They found that genetic variation across these mitochondria were reliable predictors of life expectancy in males, but not in females. Dr Dowling said the results point to numerous mutations within mitochondrial DNA that affect how long males live, and the speed at which they age. He said: Intriguingly, these same mutations have no effects on patterns of ageing in females they only affect males. All animals possess mitochondria, and the tendency for females to outlive males is common to many different species. Our results therefore suggest that the mitochondrial mutations we have uncovered will generally cause faster male ageing across the animal kingdom. The researchers said the mutations can be entirely attributed to a quirk in the way that mitochondrial genes are passed down from parents to offspring. Dr Dowling said: While children receive copies of most of their genes from both their mothers and fathers, they only receive mitochondrial genes from their mothers. This means that evolution’s quality control process, known as natural selection, only screens the quality of mitochondrial genes in mothers. If a mitochondrial mutation occurs that harms fathers, but has no effect on mothers, this mutation will slip through the gaze of natural selection, unnoticed. Over thousands of generations, many such mutations have accumulated that harm only males, while leaving females unscathed. The study builds on previous findings by Dr Dowling and his team who investigated the consequences of maternal inheritance of mitochondria in causing male infertility. Dr Dowling added: Together, our  research shows that the mitochondria are hotspots for mutations affecting male health. What we seek to do now is investigate the genetic mechanisms that males might arm themselves with to nullify the effects of these harmful mutations and remain healthy.

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston :: essays research papers

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston The novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, written by, Zora Neale Hurston, was full of imagination, imagery and phrasing. Janie’s character and dialogue seemed to slip wisdom into the reader’s head without them knowing their ingesting something deep and true. The ups and downs of Janie’s life have made her a stronger person. This is shown endless times throughout the novel. I feel that this story recognizes that there are endless problems to the human condition, such as the need to possess, fear of the unknowing and stagnation. However, the story does not give a feeling of hopelessness. Through Janie’s character, Ms. Hurston extends a recognition and understanding of humanity’s need to escape emptiness. â€Å"Dem meat skins is got tuh rattle tuh make out they’s alive.† (Hurston 183) Her solution is simple: â€Å"â€Å"Yuh got tuh go there tuh know there.† (Hurston 185) Janie sets out on a quest to make sense of inner questions. She does not sit back and let the tragedies in her life cripple her. Instead it strengthens her. Through questioning and discovery she better understands the world she lives in and how small a thing like happiness is comprised of, â€Å"If you kin see de light at daybreak, you don’t care if you die at dusk. It’s so many people never seen de light at all.† (Hurston 151) This quote caught my eye while I was reading because it makes you truly think of what really makes you happy in life. Janie married Logan Killicks for protection rather than love. He seemed to feel that he deserved to slap her around. Janie soon realizes that she is living in Nanny’s dreams rather than her own and decides to escape with Jody. A feeling of sudden newness and change came over her. â€Å"Even if Joe was not there waiting for her, the change was bound to do her good.† (Hurston 32) This shows a great strength in her character because even if Joe was not there for her she would still be determined to change without him. Joe seems closer to her ideal, closer to the dream of marriage that she has. But, he represents a black man who wishes to gain wealth and power. From the beginning of their relationship there were signs that he was not the love Janie was looking for. â€Å"On the train the next day, Joe didn’t made many speeches with rhymes to her,

Colonialism and Imperialism in Nectar in a Sieve Essay

Imperialism in Nectar in a Sievenbsp;nbsp; nbsp; The characters in the book Nectar in a Sieve had to deal with Western imperialism and they had to adapt to the changing ideas associated with Western imperialism. Throughout the book Rukmani had to struggle with her beliefs and how to cope with these changes. From the beginning Rukmani coped with these changes, from culture to her way of life, until the end of the book where even then her life was not through being changed. In the first instance Rukmani had to deal with a husband that was several castes below her. Usually if the woman was below the man she could probably do the work that he does, being used to the labor that is. Yet in Rukmani’s instance the man was below her,†¦show more content†¦We do not ask for charity, but for that which is our due’† (69). Although Rukmani’s sons lost their jobs they soon began to learn the white man’s ways, which led them to abandon the only home they knew of and venture into the city. Eventually Rukmani and her husband had to leave their home because their landlord decided to sell the property that they were renting. Their one son, Murugan, had left for the city and they had been hoping that he would take care of them. When they arrived, they discovered that he had skipped town, and deserted both his family and job. Rukmani and her husband, upon befriending a beggar child, knew not what to do about money. Being from a small town, money was only used in emergencies when they were short of food, needed to buy seed, or for some other necessary reason. Although they would buy the children goodies, such as candy, or fireworks, upon entering city life they soon discovered that money was for more than just necessity, an Rukmani was soon introduced to the western idea of materialism. After she went on a spending spree, she realized that some powerful force had taken control of her. She soon realized what everyone in the modern world would be trapped into, and that is mone y, and of planning for the future. â€Å"Plans, everyone had plans. They were all built on money.
